About the Coton De Tulear Breed

Origins

The Coton de Tulear is a small dog which originates from Madagascar. Some think Coton de Tulear is a strange name for a dog but it is very appropriate, originating mainly from the port city of Tulear in Madagascar this dog's beautiful white or nearly white coat is just like the ripe fruit of the cotton bush.

With its numerous ports, Madagascar now known as the native country of the Coton was once a popular centre of trade for seafarers and merchants. These travelers were know to carry small dogs of the Bichon type on their ships to catch rodents which meant these dogs reached ports around the world. Our Coton de Tulear is presumed to have evolved from these small Bichon-like native dogs.

Madagascar became home of the French aristocracy after France claimed it in the 17th century. With the aristocratic ladies finding it fashionable to surround themselves with uncommon treasures it soon became unlawful by royal decree for commoners to keep a Coton.

Coton de Tulear characteristics

An average Coton de Tulear measures 10 to 12 inches and weighs 5 to 7kgs.The colour of the coat is generally white. The hair is long with a cotton like texture the eyes round, dark and with a lively, intelligent expression. Full details of the breed standard can be found on the Kennel Club website.

With a life expectancy around 16 years, the Coton de Tulear is a healthy breed with relatively few known medical or hereditary health problems. Further details can be found on the UK Coton De Tulear breed clubs website.

Coton De Tulear’s are often promoted as a Hypoallergenic dog (meaning "below normal" or "slightly" allergenic) however, they do have a low dander and little doggy smell, but some people can still be allergic to them. It is important to note that there is no such thing as a completely hypoallergenic dog – the saliva and skin of a dog can still trigger an allergic event in sensitive people. It is recommended that those who suffer from pet allergies discuss their options with their doctor before choosing a pet, and those people should always visit with a dog before contemplating any potential purchase.

Coton de Tulear temperament

The Coton know also as "the anti-stress dog" is full of character with a steady temperament always appearing to be in a happy mood making for delightful company for its owner and mixing well with other dogs and children.

The bright, cheerful and loving nature of the Coton makes it hard for anyone not to fall in love with them and will soon establish themselves as a massive part of the family.

Though suitable dogs for most living environments they do need regular exercise and enjoy long walks.

Coton de Tulear grooming

One of the main considerations to owning a Coton is the time that must be invested in keeping the Coton in top condition. As a puppy they need almost daily grooming to keep the coat free of tangles, the grown-up coat is easier.

It is important to get your Coton puppy used to being brushed and combed from an early age so that he does not grow afraid of this procedure. Care of your Coton needs to includes regular brushing of the teeth and inspection of the ears.

If you are not going to show your Coton you can always have the coat trimmed which will make grooming easier.

For the show ring other than a small amount of trimming around the feet the coat must be intact.
